Possible orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Lower Southwood. Orchards are depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Aerial photographs of 1946 onwards show that the orchard to the north is covered with fruit trees, although by 1989 these have been almost completely cleared, exposing a series of parallel northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. The site of the earthworks to the south, however, is not shown as an orchard on the First Edition OS map, which may suggest that any orchard established here had been entirely cleared by this time. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 1.36 hectares of gentle northwest facing slope. The earthwork banks remain visible on Lidar-derived images of 2005.
