Three former quarry or extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of 1964 as earthwork pits on the north-facing slopes overlooking Home Farm, Poltimore. The pits measured approximately 10, 15 and 20 metres in diameter and were centred on circa SX96209598, SX96239598 and SX96359599 respectively, from west to east.
The pits did not corresponded with any quarry pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition Map of the 1880s-1890s, and had therefore probably passed out of use by the late 19th century.
The westernmost pit was very shallow, and the adjacent pit, though more substantial was also little more than a gentle hollow. The easternmost pit was the deepest and most clearly defined. It might also correspond with a feature depicted on the tithe map for Poltimore, and therefore could have been in use in the mid-19th century, but the document is unclear in this area and it is not possible to be certain. It also roughly corresponded with a rectangular feature on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition Map, possibly an agricultural building located within the pit. A smaller structure and compound are depicted slightly to the north, but also possibly within the area of the pit, on the Ordnance Survey 25inch Second Edition Map of 1904-1906, which might support the interpretation that the pit was used for agricultural purposes. This pit remains depicted on the Ordnance Survey Mastermap current at the time of the survey. The westernmost pits have been levelled.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The easternmost pit is depicted.
