HER Number:MDV113062
Name:Archaeological features to north of Roborough Reservoir

Summary

A series of linear and curvilinear anomalies were recorded on the line of a water main to the north the reservoir. Several features were subsequently recorded during a programme of archaeological work including a rectangular building platform, probably the site of a modern field barn, and pathway comprising a hollow way flanked by two banks.

Full description

Urmston, Ben, 2008, Avon Support Main, between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358939.

A geophysical survey was undertaken of a proposed 13km water main between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. Several sites of archaeological interest were detected.
In this area (Area A1) a short length of linear anomaly appears within the survey area, it is likely that it represents a former boundary, given the character of its response. A linear anomaly of similar response extends southeast from the northwestern extent of this area, although its relationship with the short anomaoly is unclear. Further to the southeast, a curvilinear anomaly of similar character is largely oriented northwest to southeast, perhaps forms a complex of former boundaries. Survey in this area was hindered by dense gorse and bracken, along with the presence of geotechnical compounds.

Taylor, S. R., 2009, Avon SWW Pipeline, Devon: Archaeological Mitigation Archive report, 11-12, Fig. 2 (Report - Assessment). SDV364052.

A programme of archaeological work was undertaken along the route of a 13.5km long water main from Roborough to Yondertown. A previous geophysical survey had identified a number of areas likely to contain archaeological deposits.
Two features were identified within the pipeline corridor in Area A1. Structure 1101 is a rectangular building platform, 15m by 7m within which were a large number of 20th century finds. It was probably the site of a modern field barn.
A feature recorded as a linear anomaly in the geophysical survey was shown to be a pathway (1106) 1.2m wide comprising a shallow hollow way flanked by two banks running north-east to south-west. Four sherds of 18th-19th century glass were recovered from the fill.
A stoney mound (1104), 1.75m by 1.3m, against which was a burnt deposit (1105), was recorded at the south-eastern end of the field. Glass and pottery dating to the 19th-20th century was recovered.
