Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the south of Cranbrook. Orchards are depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1946, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been partly grubbed up. The remaining trees have been completely cleared by 1967, exposing a series of parallel northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established. These banks occupy an area of approximately 4.45 hectares of gentle southwest facing slope, within four adjacent plots depicted on the First Edition OS map. The orchard banks are partly visible to the north on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010, although appear to have been completely levelled elsewhere.
