Name:Former Field Boundary, Oak Business Units

Summary

A curvilinear ditch, visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and as a dark cropmark by 1992, is interpreted as the remains of a former medieval field boundary that fell out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The area has since been developed.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

A shallow curvilinear earthwork, less than 2 metres wide, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946, and visible as a dark cropmark on later available aerial photographs up to 1992. It fits in to the pattern of field boundaries depicted on the available historic mapping and therefore interpreted as the remains of a field boundary of probable medieval date that became disused by the mid-19th century. A mature broadleaf tree on this alignment on the late-19th century OS map may be a remnant of this boundary feature. The area has since been developed and remains are unlikely to survive.
