HER Number:MDV113215
Name:Archaeological anomalies to the east of Brook House, Shaugh Prior

Summary

A geophysical survey along the route of a watermain identified a cluster of discrete responses and linear anomalies to the east of Brook House. These formed a band oriented northwest to southeast, meeting a larger anomaly which perhaps represents a former boundary. Subsequent archaeological work identified a curvilinear feature and a lynchet.

Full description

Urmston, Ben, 2008, Avon Support Main, between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358939.

A geophysical survey was undertaken of a proposed 13km water main between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. Several sites of archaeological interest were identified.
A cluster of discrete responses and linear anomalies (Area C6), forms a band oriented northwest to southeast, meeting a larger anomaly which perhaps represents a former boundary. The band of anomalies continues towards discrete pit-like anomalies which are distributed more densely, before the responses gradually weaken before reaching the southeastern boundary.

Taylor, S. R., 2009, Avon SWW Pipeline, Devon: Archaeological Mitigation Archive report, 14, Fig. 7 (Report - Assessment). SDV364052.

A curvilinear feature [1184], 8m long, 1.08m wide and 0.1m deep, was identified in Area C6 at the bottom of the slope. It had a single fill. A small pit [1182] lay adjacent to it which was 0.6m by 0.56m by 0.08m deep. Its single fill contained 50% angular granite stones.
A steep break of slope marks the site of a lynchet [1195] which was recorded in the geophysical survey. It showed as a stony deposit up to 5m wide, possibly the result of ploughing pushing stone from the hedge into the ground. It was not investigated.
