Full description

Urmston, Ben, 2008, Avon Support Main, between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358939.

A geophysical survey was undertaken of a proposed 13km water main between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. Several sites of archaeological interest were detected.
Linear anomalies and curvilinear anomalies in this area (Area D7) are of archaeological interest. Some may indicate a system of enclosures, although the relationship and phasing is not clear.
Discrete pit-like anomalies within the regions bounded by the ditches are likely to be of archaeological interest owing to their proximity, although their form provides few clues as to their nature or use. Other linear and discrete anomalies nearby may also be of archaeological interest. Numerous ploughing trends are apparent aligned with the extant northern boundary.

Taylor, S. R., 2009, Avon SWW Pipeline, Devon: Archaeological Mitigation Archive report, 20, Fig. 9 (Report - Assessment). SDV364052.

A ditch[1155] was identified at the northern end of Area D7 which may the same anomaly recorded by the geophysical survey. It was 0.97m wide and 0.51m deep with a single fill.
The pair of large enclosures recorded as anomalies in the geophysical survey were not identified during the controlled soil strip for the pipeline corridor. Although it was positioned in order to avoid the enclosures, part of 4034 should have been revealed. Ditch [1735] and gully [1741] were, however, recorded in the general area of the enclosure.
