Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 16, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 62 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

Sub-circular tree enclosures depicted on modern 1:2500 map flanking the road. Southern enclosure circa 25 metres diameter with bank 0.5 metre high by 1 metre wide and surrounding ditch. No internal features visible. Gorse and trees within enclosure. Enclosure to north of road is of similar appearance. Shown on Ordnance Survey 1891 1:10560 map (Sheet 93 NE) and Bicton Tithe Map. Listed in Tithe Apportionment as ‘Eleven Plantation’ (Plot No. 249). May be one of a number of small enclosures shown flanking this road on the Ordnance Survey 1801 Surveyors’ Drawing.

400 metres from the last pair of 'barrow's (MDV10475 and MDV10477) is another pair, marked by pine trees. These have no central mounds but consist of encircling banks with external ditches, their centres being planted with Scots pine trees. These resemble prehistoric disc or saucer barrows found
in Dorset and Wiltshire but are thought to be more of the late 18th-19th century landscaping works carried out by Lord Rolle on the Bicton estate.
