Summary

A possible ring ditch was visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark overlooking the Exe Valley, east of Burrow Farm, Rewe. This ring ditch is part of a concentration of five or six similarly shaped cropmarks of varing size visible in this area. Two were originally recorded under record MDV79049 and 4 previously grouped under MDV10215.
It is difficult to confidently ascribe date and function to ring ditches based on cropmark evidence alone. For instance they could be evidence of barrows of Bronze Age date or round houses of Iron Age to Roman date. To overcome problems differing dates and functions within this group, the previously grouped ring ditches have now been ascribed individual monument records.
The cropmarks recorded here were variable in width but no more than 2 metres wide, enclosing a roughly circular area less than 5 metres in diameter. The archaeological cropmarks might have overlain, and been partly obscured by, slightly amorphous cropmarks of natural origin, but it might be possible to identify breaks, perhaps entrances, on the west and east sides of the possible ring ditch cropmarks. The broad ditches and small diameter of the enclosed area makes determination of date and function problematical. The ring ditch might be evidence for a small burial mound of Bronze Age to Post-Roman date or a round house of Iron Age to Roman date, but is possibly most likely to be evidence for a small barrow of Bronze Age date.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs or CUCAP images held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
