Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

Evidence of a former orchard of possible post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible on the gentle south facing slopes to the west of Stevenstone Barton, Upton Pyne, as narrow earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and on digital images derived from lidar. The ridges were clearly visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1967, and remained visible on digital images derived from lidar data acquired between 1998 and 2014.
The plot of land within which the banks were visible was not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but was listed as an orchard on the Tithe Apportionments for Upton Pyne. This supports the interpretation that the orchard was cleared of trees between circa 1840 and circa 1880.
