Cropmarks which have formed over infilled ditches of uncertain date are visible on aerial photographs of 1984, to the northwest of Sowton. The cropmarks comprise two linear features of possible former field boundaries. The longer of these is northeast to southwest aligned, with a shorter cropmark perpendicular to this which is northwest to southeast aligned. The cropmarks appear to pre-date a historic and extant field boundary which is first depicted on the Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48 and so may be of some antiquity. A number of cropmarks interpreted as being of possible prehistoric or Romano-British date, including several enclosures and a ring ditch have been recorded in the vicinity and so may be of comparable date. The cropmarks may equally, however, be the result of more recent activity, such as land drainage. The cropmarks are not visible on other aerial photographs viewed as part of this survey.
