Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

A boundary is partly depicted here on the Clyst Honiton Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48.

Devon County Council, 1992, DAP 14402, DAP 14402/28-29 29-JUN-1992 (VG) (Aerial Photograph). SDV359251.

The former field boundary is visible as a cropmark ditch and bank.

Austrums, R., 2011, Geophysical Report: Exeter Gateway (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV349965.

Brett, M., 2011, Project Dixie (Phase 1; Plot 1) Hayes Farm, Clyst Honiton, Devon: Archaeological Evaluation, 9 (Report - Evaluation). SDV355702.

Sections of a wide deep ditch (803 and 902) were revealed in Trenches 8 and 9 during an archaeological evaluation on land at Hayes Farm which correlate well with anomalies recorded by geophysical survey. No finds were recovered from the 803 but finds dated to the 19th century including pottery, clay tobacco pipe, glass and ceramic building material were found in 902 together with two residual sherds of medieval pottery.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

Cropmarks which have formed over an infilled ditch and levelled bank of a former field boundary of potential medieval to post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs of 1992, at Hayes Farm. The cropmarks are visible as an L-shaped cropmark ditch which is northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast aligned and which is flanked along its southern edge by cropmarks of a former levelled bank. The former boundary appears to have partly passed out of use by the time of the Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48. Contiguous cropmarks of former field boundaries to the immediate east of these are also visible on aerial photographs of 1992, although since they are depicted on the Parish Tithe Map, were not transcribed as part of this survey. The former field boundary recorded here was also identified during a geophysical survey carried out in 2011.
