Dean, R., 20/05/2015, Land adjacent to Lyte Lane, West Charleton, Devon (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV359255.
Geophysical survey undertaken as supporting information for a fourthcoming planning application.
Groups 26 and 27 may relate to deposits of strongly heated material and, as such, could be related to past craft, industrial or funerary activities. Alternatively, they may reflect relatively recent deposits of ferrous material but this is less likely.
Groups 35 and 37 have characteristics that indicate they could relate to in-situ highly heated deposits such as, for example, those left by furnaces and kilns. The possibility remains that they reflect relatively recent deposits of ferrous material with fortuitous anomaly alignments.

Bampton, J., 2016, Lyte Lane, West Charleton, South Hams: Evaluation (Report - Evaluation). SDV361114.
South West Archaeology Ltd. Were commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of a proposed housing development in May 2016. This phase of work builds upon a previous geophysical surveys undertaken over and near to the proposed development area in 2000 (Johnson 2000) and 2014 (Dean 2014), and field work including field-walking and excavation in 2000 (Bayer 2000). The results of this evaluation will inform the planning decision and the extent and nature of any subsequent programme of archaeological mitigation required as a condition of a planning consent.
A total of 105 potential features were identified, including ditches, gullies and lynchets.
Trench 6 was located to target a positive linear anomaly and flanking discrete positive anomalies in the south-west corner of the proposed development area. Ditch [603] was cut into the natural and equates to the eastern of the discrete flanking geophysical anomalies. Ditch [606] equates to the linear geophysical anomaly.
Ditch [603], was located at the east end of the trench. It was a linear ditch aligned north-south. It contained no finds. Ditch [606] was located in the middle of the trench. The topsoil (600) contained two sherds of white refined earthen ware and one fragment of green bottle glass.
Trench 32 was located to target anomalies just to the south of the barrow. The anomaly equated to the lower aspect of a double lynchet, [3203] and [3205]. Both lynchets were located in the north half of the trench. Lynchet 3203 contained one sherd of Bronze Age pottery and one sherd of a medieval ceramic handle with a pale green glaze. Lynchet [3205] contained a single fill. The topsoil contained one fragment of animal bone, one fragment of CBM/brick and one fragment of coal.
