HER Number:MDV113728
Name:Possible Manganese Mine North East of Langford

Summary

A large roughly circular hollow was visible as an earthwork on the south-facing combe slopes north-east of Langford, on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data. The pit is probably evidence of small scale post-medieval quarrying or mineral extraction, possibly for manganese.

A roughly circular hollow circa 50 metres in diameter was visible as an earthwork on the south-facing combe slopes north-east of Langford, on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data. The hollow is probably evidence of small scale quarrying or mineral extraction; evidence for manganese extraction has previously been recorded to the south-west at Lagford. A similar but smaller hollow some 110 metres west might be evidence of an additional former quarry pit.
