Evidence of a former orchard of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible as an area of low and narrow earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards on the north-west facing slopes of a narrow combe to the south-west of Upton Pyne.
The banks were roughly 5 to 6 metres wide and arranged in a roughly north-west to south-east orientation, crossing the contours of the combe slope. This was probably to aid drainage of excess surface water towards the steam that flows along the combe to drain into the River Creedy to the south.
The plot of land within which the banks was listed as Middle Orchard, part of Oakford, on the Tithe Apportionament for Upton Pyne, and was depicted as part of a larger orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It was largely cleared of trees on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s and therefore probably fell out of use in the first half of the 20th century.
The tree planting banks remain visible as low earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
