Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

Evidence of a former orchard of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible as an area of low and narrow earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s to 1960s and images derived from lidar data, on the south-facing slopes overlooking the River Exe to the south of Beer Cottages, Upton Pyne.
The visible earthwork banks fall within a larger plot to the south of Beer Cottages depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The wider plot remained lightly planted with trees into the 1940s. Digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 demonstrate that a significant proportion of this area, including that with visible tree planting banks and an area to the east of the cottages on which banks cannot be seen, remains planted with trees and probably therefore was still in use as an orchard. The banks to the south and west of the cottage remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
