Tree planting banks of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 as part of an extant orchard of probably contemporary date on the south and south-east facing slopes of a combe at Woodrow Barton, Brampford Speke. The banks were probably made to improve drainage of surface water into the combe to the south.
The earthwork banks visible on the lidar derived images correspond with an area depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and listed as Great Orchard part of ‘Great Woodrow’ on the Tithe map for Brampford Speke. Digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 show the orchard to remain densely planted. The extant orchard and associated earthwork banks therefore date from at least the first half of the 19th century.
The OS first edition map also depicts the orchard extending to the north and east of the farmstead, but this area of planting has been cleared and levelled for the expansion of agricultural buildings.
