HER Number:MDV113769
Name:Orchards at Goffin's Farm

Summary

Evidence of former orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin were visible as areas of low and narrow earthwork banks to the north and south of Goffin’s Farm, Exeter, on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data. The banks probably survive as earthworks to the north of the farmhouse but to the south appear to have been levelled.

Evidence of former orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin were visible as areas of low and narrow earthwork banks to the north and south of Goffin’s Farm, Exeter, on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data.
The visible earthwork banks fall within two plots depicted as orchards on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch maps and the orchards therefore probably predated the mid to late 19th century.
Very little tree cover remained be seen over the banks of the southern orchard on aerial photographs of 1946, leaving the underlying banks exposed, and this orchard had therefore probably been cleared over the first half of the 20th century. Significantly more of the northern orchard remained planted at this time, but some clearance had occurred on the south and east sides, possibly related to expansion of the farmstead.
Goffin’s Dairy has now expanded into the area of the south orchard and landscaping appears to have removed all evidence of tree planting banks in this area.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

Goffin's Farm has expanded commercial or agricultural buildings into the area of the south ourchard.
