HER Number:MDV113777
Name:Orchards at Rollestone Farm

Summary

Evidence of former orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin were visible as areas of low and narrow earthwork banks to the north and north-east of Rollestone Farm on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data. The banks probably survive as earthworks to the north-east of the farmhouse but to the north appear to have been almost completely levelled.

Evidence of former orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin were visible as areas of low and narrow earthwork banks to the north and north-east of Rollestone Farm on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data.
The visible earthwork banks fall within two plots depicted as orchards, or part of larger orchards, on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The orchards therefore probably predated the mid to late 19th century.
Both orchards remained only very sparsely planted into the 1940s, with that to the north-east almost completely bare of trees. Moderate planting persisted into the 1990s in the north-east orchard but by 2010 this had been partly built over and the remaining orchard cleared, leaving tree planting banks clearly visibleon digital images derived from lidar data. The banks in the north orchard appear to have been almost completely levelled.
