Name:Rendlestone Farmstead, Dartmoor Forest

Summary

The site of Rendlestone farmstead was shown on 19th and early 20th century maps but is no longer present. Rendlestone was mentioned in the 17th and 18th centuries. Remains consist of a rectangular platform measuring 50m northwest to southeast by 20m and 1.0m high. Two buildings occupied the southern half of this plot and they are represented by a low, grass covered stony spread. Their associated gardens lay to the north and some of the boundaries survive as low banks 1.5m wide and 0.3m high.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

'Rendle Stone' shown on 19th century Tithe Map as a square building with a small square building to the north-east in a trianglar enclosure a to the south of the road junction. The Apportionment for 'Rendle Stone Farm' lists Field Number 1 as 'Dwelling-house, Outhouse, Court and Garden'. Map object based partly on this source.

Rendlestone was mentioned as 'a great stone called Roundle' in 1675 and as 'Rundlestone' in 1702.

(23/08/2002) SX 57647496. The site of Rendle Stone Farm is now marked by a rectangular platform measuring 50m northwest to southeast by 20m and 1.0m high. Two buildings occupied the southern half of this plot and they are represented by a low, grass covered stony spread. Their associated gardens lay to the north and some of the boundaries survive as low banks 1.5m wide and 0.3m high.
They are depicted as roofed buildings in 1884 and 1951 (historic Ordnance Survey mapping) though have since been completely demolished.
