Earthwork banks of possible medieval to post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs of 1957 onwards, at Shapwick Grange Farm. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 1.36 hectares of steep north facing slope, along the southern face of a combe. The fairly sinuous earthworks are broadly east to west and north to south aligned and may represent former field boundaries which appear to have passed out of use by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. The tithe map for this area is either not complete or was not surveyed, so it is not possible to ascertain whether the boundaries were extant around this time. The earthwork banks remain visible on Lidar-derived images of between 1998-2014.
