A possible chalk pit of likely post-medieval to modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Shapwick Grange Farm. The small sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 16m in length by 13m in width and is located along the steep north facing slope of a combe. The earthwork pit, which remains visible on Lidar-derived images of between 1998-2014, is located in an area where a number of chalk pits are depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s.
