Chalk pits are depicted in the vicinity here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s.

Possible chalk pits of likely post-medieval to modern date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Shapwick Grange Farm. The semi-circular shaped earthworks measure 13m and 18m in length and are located either side of a historic and extant field boundary, along the steep north facing slope of a combe. The earthwork pits, which remain visible on Lidar-derived images of 1998-2014, are located in an area where a number of chalk pits are depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s.
