Summary

Churchyard is thought to date from the 14th or 15th century, like the church. A trench dug in the early 1980s near the tower uncovered a skeleton and a clay pipe thought to date to the later 17th century.

Full description

Greeves, T. A. P., 1984, Finds from trench excavation in Cornwood Churchyard, 7/3/1984, sketch of pipe (Worksheet). SDV168175.

During excavation of a trench near the north side of the tower in Cornwood Churchyard, a skeleton was found at a depth of 0.6 metres, and a clay pipe of Oswald Type 5 (1640-60). Intact bowl and part of the stem of pipe recovered. The rim is rouletted (rather crudely) and there are no marks on either the bowl or stem.
The skeleton was apparently lying in an west-east alignment, with head to the west.
