Earthwork banks of possible medieval to post-medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, at Payne’s Place Farm. The two earthworks comprise a single L-shaped earthwork bank, which is northwest to southeast aligned with a short return to the southwest at its northwest extent, and a shorter northeast to southwest aligned bank located to the north of this earthwork. The earthwork banks closely respect the historic field patterns depicted on the Axminster Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48 and classified as 'medieval enclosures based on strip fields' under the Historic Landscape Characterisation project. The former field boundaries, other than a short section of the L-shaped earthwork, appear however to have passed out of use by this time. The northern of the two earthworks is closely parallel to a curvilinear boundary on its western side and may have defined a former double-banked access track or hollow-way leading up to Payne’s Place Farm. The earthworks remain partly visible on Lidar-derived images of 1998-2014, although the western extent of the earthworks has been levelled following extension of the farm buildings.
