Name: | Brick Kiln circa 335 metres south-east of Salston, Ottery St. Mary |
---|
Summary
The remains of a brick clamp were recorded during excavations undertaken as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. The remains comprised an area of intense burning and associated spreads of ash, charcoal and brick fragments. The size and method of moulding of the bricks and the lack of a frog suggest a pre 19th century date for the clamp.

Site OTA 3.07. At the eastern end of the site were the remains of a demolished brick kiln. Bricks associated with the kiln appear to be hand-moulded and are un-frogged. A date in the later 18th to mid 19th century is suggested. The site is located 0.5 kilometres to the east of a field named Brick Plot on the Tithe Map and Apportionment

Site 5. Salston A. Brick clamp. An area, circa 6.0 metres by 6.0 metres, of intense heat discoloration was recorded during a watching brief on this site, associated with spreads of ash and charcoal and brick fragments. The burnt material is interpreted as the remains of a brick clamp. The burning was clearly intense and some of the brick fragments have vitrified faces and evidence of over-firing internally as well.
The size and method of moulding of the bricks and the lack of a frog suggest a pre 19th century date as does the lack of any indication of a brickfield on the Tithe Map (although there is a field named Brick Plot some 500 metres away). The dating from type is very imprecise but itinerant brick making is likely to have died out with the coming of improved transport during the 19th century. See report for more details.
