Post-dating the earlier historic maps, the oldest source available for the building is the collection of 1940s aerial photographs, which show the house.

Grumley-Grennan, T. + Hardy, M., 2000, Gidleigh. A Dartmoor Village Past and Present, 34-38 (Monograph). SDV359347.

The largest property in the village, the house dates from 1925 when the old house burnt down and this replacement was commissioned. Building work took four years and was undertaken by owner Charles McIlwraith, who was a popular owner retaining a staff of 20 to run the house and gardens in 1928. After McIlwraith's death in 1932 the property was bought by Major Rudolph (Rollo) Mayne who with his wife improved the property, adding tennis courts and developing the water gardens, as well as entertaining the comic novelist Evelyn Waugh regularly.
The house changed hands after Rollo's death a few times before being bought in 1977 and reopened as a small country house hotel. After many years of hard work and investment it flourished and is one of the finest hotels in south-west England, with an international reputation, winning many awards and boasting a two Michelin star restaurant.

Ordnance Survey, 2016, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359352.

Modern map shows the house.
