Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

One rectangular dwelling is depicted on the Tithe Map at this location.

The late 19th century historic map depicts 'Brook Cottage'; the cottage now has buildings adjoining at the northern end.

Donkeys Cottage (previously Brook Cottage) seems to have been built for employees on the Gidleigh estate in the early 19th century. Became known as Donkeys Corner in the later 20th century when the sisters Joy and Betty Whateley lived there as the young ponies and donkeys on the moor used to congregate in that sheltered corner near Moortown Gate.
