Full description

Editors, 1911, Early cider mill from Axmouth, 209 (Article in Serial). SDV123867.

A medieval quernstone from Huxdon Farm, where it stood in the farmyard and was used as a pig trough. The stone was bought by a local resident following a fire at the farm 15-20 years ago during which the farmhouse and buildings were burnt to the ground. It also been suggested that the stone is an early cider press because of the hole through the side.

Worth, R. H., 1971, Worth's Dartmoor, 373, Fig. 107 (Monograph). SDV337619.

Lower stone originally from Oxdown Farm but now forming the cap on a gatepost on the south side of Seaton Road. The stone is ten-sided with panel ornament. The spout hol is through an angle of the stone rather than through one of the faces. There are projections either side, perhaps for fixing the quern to a frame. The stone is 12in high, the trough 14.5in diameter and 3.5in deep.
