Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

An earthwork is depicted here.

Environment Agency, 2000-2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Environment Agency LAST RETURN 03-FEB-2007 (Cartographic). SDV363954.

Earthworks of sub-oval pits and an irregularly shaped bank are visible.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2001-2002, Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Transcriptions and Database Records, RAF/ CPE/UK/2149/4197&8 1947 (Interpretation). SDV346287.

An earthwork bank enclosure of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs of 1947.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2016, Backlog Recording of the Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV359374.

Given the density of industrial sites recorded within the area, it seems probable the earthwork represents the remains of a former mine shaft or quarry of post-medieval to modern date. The earthwork is first depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’-90’s and remains extant on the Ordnance Survey 2016 MasterMap.

Ordnance Survey, 2016, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359352.

The earthwork is extant.

Ordnance Survey, 2020, MasterMap 2020 (Cartographic). SDV363413.

An earthwork is shown in this location.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

Earthworks of two sub-oval pits, between 15m-20 m long, and an irregularly shaped bank, circa 28m long, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007. The bank partly corresponds with an earthwork depicted in this location on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey First Edition map and on the 2020 Ordnance Survey MasterMap. They are interpreted as possible post-medieval or 19th century quarries or mine shafts with an associated spoil heap which had probably passed out of use by the late 19th century.
Earthworks of a banked enclosure were transcribed here from aerial photographs of 1947 during the Tamar Valley NMP survey. They have been superseded by transcriptions from this survey.
