Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Tithe Map depicts this building; plot 49 'cottages' on apportionment. The map shows four large main buildings making up the block of buildings in the centre of the square; these were mostly later subdivided, except number 5.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows that the building has been altered and may have been divided into an L-shaped building with smaller additional square building and passageway to the north-east.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

The early 20th century historic map appears to show further alteration to the adjoining building to the north-east and possibly to this corner building also.

Rice, I., 2002, The Book of Chagford. A Town Apart, 25, 112, 115 (Monograph). SDV356605.

Gray's shop occupied the corner plot in the block of buildings in the Lower Square and operated in the early 20th century, selling jewellery and watches. Later, it became a newsagents and although it has changed hands a number of times since 1930; being Hallets, Hardings, Nichols and Youds it continues to trade to this day.

Google, 2016, Google Streetview (Website). SDV359355.

2011 image shows this business is currently Sally's Newsagents.

Ordnance Survey, 2016, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359352.

The modern mapping more closely matches the late 19th century historic mapping and shows two buildings occupying this plot; numbers 11 and 9a.
