HER Number:MDV114354
Name:Field system west of Wheelwrights Cottage, Gulworthy

Summary

Field boundaries of a possible medieval or post-medieval field system are visible on aerial photographs as linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and cropmarks of ditches and banks. Curvilinear banks are also visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthworks do not correspond with any curvilinear features in this location.

Environment Agency, 2000-2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Environment Agency LAST RETURN 03-FEB-2007 (Cartographic). SDV363954.

Curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2001-2002, Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Transcriptions and Database Records, RAF/CPE/UK/2149/3143-4; RAF/540/483/F20/4196-7; RAF/CPE/UK/2149/3143-4 (Interpretation). SDV346287.

Transcriptions of several linear, curvilinear and rectilinear banks and ditches from earthwork and cropmark evidence visible on three aerial photograph sorties correspond to a database record of an earthwork field system of ‘unknown medieval’ date to the south-west of Lumburn, to the north-east of Gunnislake.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

Curvilinear banks are visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2016, Backlog Recording of the Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV359374.

The aerial photograph references attached to the Tamar Valley NMP transcription attributes are incomplete; the dates of the photographs are not included.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 1 (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

Curvilinear banks, circa 5 metres wide and orientated north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013. The visible earthworks occupy an area of circa 7 hectares and define a number of rectilinear land parcels, up to 135 metres long.
The earthworks do not correspond with any curvilinear features shown in this location on the late-19th century Ordnance Survey First Edition map but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as post-medieval enclosures.
They are therefore interpreted as relict field boundaries of a medieval or post-medieval field system, the field boundaries having been removed by the late-19th century.
These earthworks were recorded as two separate features (338.12 & 338.14) during the Understanding Landscapes Project. They are probably associated and so have been incorporated into a single record.
The visible earthworks partly correspond with a field boundary at SX45667304 which was previously transcribed from aerial photographs during the Tamar Valley NMP survey. This field boundary has been superseded by transcriptions from this survey because of the improved spatial accuracy of the lidar data, which was not previously available to the Tamar NMP project.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 338.12 & 338.14 (Interpretation). SDV363949.

338.12
Medieval field boundaries identified in MDV114354. A boundary bank bisects the already identified field boundaries that is not shown on the HER. SX 45677 73050.
338.14
Curvilinear field boundary 80m east of straight boundary both in approximately north south orientation. SX 45607 72927.
