Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Two curvilinear banks transcribed as part of the Tamar Valley NMP correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map.

Environment Agency, 2000-2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Environment Agency LAST RETURN 19-APR-2019 (Cartographic). SDV363954.

A curvilinear bank with flanking narrow curvilinear ditches and two parallel curvilinear ditches are visible as subtle earthworks.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2001-2002, Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Transcriptions and Database Records, CPE/1890/4336; F62/58/6399/371 (Interpretation). SDV346287.

Cropmark and earthwork banks and ditches are visible on aerial photographs and have been interpreted as post-medieval field boundaries.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

A curvilinear bank with flanking narrow curvilinear ditches and two parallel curvilinear ditches are visible as subtle earthworks.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2016, Backlog Recording of the Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV359374.

Only part of the photo reference is given in the transcription attributes, so the date of the photographs is not known.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 1 (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

A north-east to south-west orientated curvilinear bank circa 80 metres in length with flanking narrow ditches are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. Two east to west orientated parallel curvilinear ditches between circa 100 and 130 metres in length area also visible.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic maps. One of the curvilinear ditches appears to correspond with a ditch transcribed as part of the Tamar Valley NMP.
The historic landscape is characterised as ‘post-medieval enclosures with medieval elements’.
The earthworks are interpreted as field boundaries of probable post-medieval origin that passed out of use by the mid-19th century. However, the two parallel ditches may be of earlier origin.
Other post-medieval field boundaries have been transcribed as part of the Tamar Valley NMP, but were not visible on the lidar visualisations.
