HER Number:MDV114606
Name:Iron Age Gully circa 370 metres west of Crablake Farm, Exminster

Summary

A shallow curvilinear gully, the remains of an eaves-drainage feature defining an Iron Age roundhouse, was revealed during excavations undertaken as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. Soil samples from the gully contained crop processing waste. Radiocarbon dates of 347-95 cal. BC and 176-53 cal. BC were returned from barley grains from the sample.

Site ATK 14.09. A curvilinear ditch (14.09.021) was recorded in the eastern part of the site, potentially the remains of a ring ditch. A sample from the fill produced an interesting assemblage of crop processing waste.

Site 15. Crablake Farm, Exminster. A shallow curvilinear gully was revealed during excavations undertaken as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. The gully is interpreted as an eaves-drainage feature defining a round house; the gully would have enclosed a circle about 12 metres diameter. Soil samples from the gully contained crop processing waste. Radiocarbon dates of 347-95 cal. BC and 176-53 cal. BC were returned from barley grains from the sample. The evidence suggests an Iron Age farmstead in the vicinity, although it does not appear to have been enclosed. It also probably accounts for the anomalous Iron Age radiocarbon date from one of the Bronze Age pits to the west.
