Earthwork pits of possible former post-medieval to 19th century extraction pits are visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northwest of Battens. The three adjacent extraction pits measure between 27m to 66m in length and are positioned alongside historic field boundaries. The extent of these earthworks are depicted as copses on the Parish Tithe map of 1838-48, the trees likely being established within the extraction pits following their abandonment. The earthworks are located in an area where a number of similar such features have been recorded during this survey. The extraction pit may represent a former marl pit, a number of which are depicted in close proximity on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
