A former quarry or extractive pit, probably a quarry pit of post-medieval to 19th century date, was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and 1989 as an earthwork, south-west of Springfield Farm, Honiton. The pit was not depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch first edition map, and therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s. It was possibly a precursor or continuation of a pit immediately to the north-east that was depicted on the historic map, and annotated as ‘Old Gravel Pit’. This second pit was not transcribed by the survey but is included in the monument extent.
