A former probable extractive pit of possible post-medieval date was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an earthwork pit on the north-west facing slopes north-east of Perrie Hale, Honiton. The pit closely corresponds with a plot of land on the Tithe Map for Honiton, listed on the Tithe Apportionments as an orchard. This supports the interpretation that this former pit had passed out of use as a quarry and been reused as a small orchard in the 19th century, a pattern recorded elsewhere in the survey and in previous NMP surveys in Devon. The pit plot was not marked on the Tithe Map, and had probably therefore passed out of use as orchard by this date. The pit has probably been reused as a pond, as depicted on the current Ordnance Survey Mastermap. It is obscured from view by dense tree cover on more recent imagery but a slightly enlarged pit can be seen as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data acquired in 2016.
