Summary

These two three-window fronted houses date from the mid-late 19th century and show care being taken to achieve total symmetry of their elevations – while the taller proportions of their windows add a certain elegance to their overall design. Both rendered and slated, their materials follow local tradition, while the string bands and bracketed door hoods add a touch more decoration than was normal in former times.

Nos 3 and 4 Totnes Road SX69856007
This pair of houses is not represented on the 1843 Tithe Map but judging from their appearance were probably built soon after this date. They are stone built with a single span slate roof. The axial gable end stacks are of brick, the fronts facing the street are rendered with sash windows. Each door has a moulded decorative architrave.
The height and symmetrical appearance give a well-proportioned quality to this pair of houses.
They would appear to have been built in the space formerly occupied by the drill yard (see separate worksheet).
