Name:Quarry Pit and Buildings, Spilcombe Copse, Monkton

Summary

A former probable extractive pit or quarry of possible 19th to 20th century date and two probably associated buildings were intermittently visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an irregularly shaped earthwork pit and rectilinear structures on the steep north-east facing slopes of a combe now within Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish. The pit remained clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.

A former probable extractive pit or quarry of possible 19th to 20th century date and two probably associated buildings were intermittently visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an earthwork pit and rectilinear structures on the steep north-east facing slopes of a combe now within Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish.
The pit is irregularly shaped and measures between circa 30 and 50 metres across. A small structure up to 3 metres long was visible located within the body of the pit on aerial photographs of 1969. A rectilinear structure circa 18 metres long and 5 metres wide was visible roughly 456 metres east of the pit on aerial photographs of 1947. This structure remained visible on the 1969 photographs and digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2014, but appeared to be in a ruinous condition. The smaller structure in the quarry can also still be seen on these more recent images, but appears to have been moved. The larger structure is depicted on the Ordnance Survey MasterMap base layer and has therefore not been transcribed. Tree cover obscures much of the earthwork on the most recent aerial photographs but the pit remained clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. Additional smaller pits were also visible within the wood on the lidar data, farther to the north.
