Former probable extractive pits or quarries of possible 19th to 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as earthwork pits on the north-east facing slopes south of Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish. Three irregularly shaped pits were visible, measuring between 12 and 40 metres across. The function of the pits is unclear but they may have been associated with the quarry pit recorded circa 190 metres to the north, within Spilcombe Copse. The pits could be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs of 1969 which might support the interpretation that they have been partly infilled, but survive to be visible as slight earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016.
