Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Clay pits are depicted within close proximity here. The earthwork abuts and so post-dates two historic field boundaries along its northern and eastern edges.

A possible clay pit of likely post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the southeast of Twistgates Farm. The earthwork is semi-circular in shape, measures approximately 35m in length by 30m in width and abuts and so post-dates two historic field boundaries along its northern and eastern edges. The earthwork is located in close proximity to two clay pits depicted in close proximity to the northwest on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. The former clay pit is visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2014.
