Name: | Possible Sand Extraction Pits on Sandpit Hill |
---|
Summary
Possible earthwork cuttings of between medieval to 19th century date are visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, on Sandpit Hill, which is a possible clue as to the nature of the earthworks. Some caution as to the origin of these earthworks should, however, be excercised and it is also possible they are the result of natural slippage.

Possible earthwork cuttings of between medieval to 19th century date are visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, on Sandpit Hill, which is a possible clue as to the nature of the earthworks. The crescent shaped earthworks are visible to a length of approximately 230m and appear to have been cut into the side of steep southwest facing slope. Only the working face of these possible cuttings has been transcribed. The workings, however, may have encompassed a larger area on the southwest side of the working face. A similar cutting (MDV114863) is visible approximately 350m to the southwest. The earthworks remain visible on aerial photographs of 2000, although are not clearly shown on lidar derived images. Some caution as to the origin of these earthworks should, however, be excercised and it is also possible they are the result of natural slippage. They have nonetheless been recorded given their location on Sandpit Hill.
