Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Possible former field boundaries of between medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the west of Birch Oak Farm. The linear and curvilinear earthworks are broadly northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest aligned and occupy an area of approximately 3.37 hectares of gentle and moderate northeast facing slope. The Parish Tithe map appears to be un-surveyed here, so it is not possible to determine whether these field boundaries were extant by this time, although they do appear to have passed out of use by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The Historic Landscape Characterisation project has classified this area as comprising ‘medieval enclosures based on strip fields’, so may be of medieval origin. A number of other earthwork banks of possible former field boundaries were also recorded within the vicinity here during this survey.
