A probable former quarry or extractive pit possibly of post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an earthwork pit on the west facing slopes to the south-east of Higher Northcote Farm. The pit was irregularly ovoid in shape and measured approximately 65 by 40 metres in size. The pit was not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s. Several gravel pits were depicted immediately to the south and it is possible the relict pit had a similar function.
The pit was most clearly visible in low shadow on aerial photographs of 1982, but remained visible as subtle earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
