Curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data, overlooking the River Otter to the north-west of Cheney’s Farm.
The earthwork banks and ditches do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on either the Tithe Map for Honiton or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. However, they do fall within the overall field pattern of roughly north-west to south-east aligned curvilinear boundaries. They might therefore be evidence of a medieval phase of enclosure that had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
Towards the north-west end of the field the relict boundaries define a roughly rectilinear or sub-square enclosure circa 70 metres by 80 metres in size. This was probably simply a subdivision of the field system, but it is possible this rectilinear boundary was influenced by the incorporation of an earlier enclosure, perhaps of later prehistoric date.
A probably post-medieval orchard was previously located within these boundaries and has been recorded separately (MDV114976)
