The remains of a field boundary and ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage of probable medieval or post-medieval to 20th century date were visible as low, earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data, on the south-facing slopes north-east of Woodhayne Farm, Combe Raleigh.
The probable former field boundary bank was over 5 metres wide and abutted an extant boundary at its southern end. This boundary appeared to enclose an area of parallel earthwork banks spaced on average 10 metres apart and aligned roughly cross-contour, presumably to aid drainage. The earthworks do not correspond with any orchard features depicted on the Tithe Map for Combe Raleigh or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and probably therefore represent an orchard that was removed prior to circa 1840.
Linear and regular earthworks crossing this site in a WSW-ESE direction are probably evidence of the installation of modern services.
