Full description

Gerrard, S., 17/07/1997, 143367 (Un-published). SDV356887.

Site visit 17th July 1997. Bowl barrow on Ugworthy Moor lying 710 metrese south-south-west of West Ugworthy House. Diameter 35.8 metres, height 2.5 metres. Surrounded on three sides by a field boundary which overlies the edge of the mound and its surrounding ditch, which survives as a buried feature.

Visited on 23rd November 1977. a probable bowl barrow with an almost flat top. No visible ditch, but the mound is enclosed by field banks, save on the east side. Other details: Plan.

One of two large barrows, both ploughed, in good condition, appear intact. The southern (a) 106 feet diameter, 10 feet high, south of road.

Visited on 7th May 1969. Pasture. Diameter 40 paces, height 7 feet.


Devon Committee for Rescue Archaeology, 1979 - 1981, North Devon Barrow Survey, DCRA ND2 (Archive - Survey). SDV341310.

Site visit 20th November 1979. Diameter 37.7 metres, height 2.25 metres. Cut on west, north and south by hedges. Slightly distorted on north side by hedge. Much has been truncated and mound may have been circa 50 metres in diameter originally. Hedges have probably prevented further damage. No sign of ditch or berm. Good condition.

The southernmost of two barrows known as Ugworthy Barrows on a high ridge overlooking the valley of the Small Brook. It survives as a circular mound which measures 35.8 metres in diameter and is 2.5 metres high. It is surrounded on three sides by a field boundary which overlies the edge of the mound and its surrounding ditch. The surrounding ditch from which material to construct the mound was derived is preserved as a buried feature 4 metres wide. The boundary banks and stock proof fence are excluded from the scheduling although the ground beneath is included.
