The remains of two possible former extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible as a shallow earthwork hollows on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data, on the north-west-facing slopes south of Barton Farm, Combe Raleigh. Located closest to the summit of the spur, the smaller of the two pits was oval or sub-circular in shape and measures 30 to 36 metres in diameter. The larger pit, located slightly downslope, was more irregular in shape and measured circa 60 metres across at its widest point. A slight rise on its southern edge may be evidence for a spoil heap. This pit corresponds with a small copse on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch map, also marked on the Tithe Map for Combe Raleigh, albeit slightly mislocated, which might support the interpretation that it had been unused for some time prior to the mid-19th century.
