Summary

Former field boundaries were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s to 1980s as earthwork banks and ditches to the south of Combe Hill, Combe Raleigh. With the exception of a lateral, north-west to south-east aligned boundary centred at circa ST16030254, the former boundaries were not depicted on the Tithe map for Combe Raleigh, and had therefore largely been removed prior to the 1840s. None of the boundaries were depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map of circa 1880, although veteran hedgerow trees, relics of the former boundaries are marked.
The curvilinear form of the relict boundaries and their position roughly parallel to boundaries within the extant field system might support the interpretation that the earthworks are remnants of a cross-contour strip field system of medieval origin.
The easternmost boundaries in the group fall within the area of a lidar survey, and can be seen to survive as subtle earthwork banks.
