An irregularly shaped pit was visible as an earthwork on the south-east facing slopes on aerial photographs of 1947, approximately 25 metres north-west of Higher Crook Farmhouse. Approximately 45 metres by 13 metres in size, the pit is probably the remains of a former extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date. The pit is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map or Tithe Map for Combe Raleigh, but falls within an area symbolised as an orchard. The pit therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s, with the otherwise agriculturally unproductive land subsequently used as part of a wider orchard. The location of the pit has now been developed as part of farmyard expansion, and the pit filled and levelled.
